About Us
The Jamaican National HIV/STI Programme is dedicated to promoting universal access to treatment, care, and prevention services for all Jamaicans. Learn about our structure, leadership, and the ministries that drive our mission forward.
Programme Goals & Vision
The National HIV/STI Programme works toward a Jamaica where every person has access to comprehensive HIV and STI prevention, treatment, and care. Our strategic objectives guide national efforts to reduce transmission and improve health outcomes across the island.
The Jamaican National HIV/STI Programme operates as a central coordinating body within the country's public health framework, bringing together the Ministry of Health and Wellness, regional health authorities, and a wide network of partner organizations. The programme's structure is designed to ensure that prevention, treatment, and care services reach every corner of the island, from urban centres in Kingston to rural communities. By aligning its operations with national health policies and international best practices, the programme works to strengthen the country's response to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections while promoting the dignity and rights of all individuals seeking services.
At the heart of the programme's mission is the goal of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, a priority that reflects a deep commitment to protecting the next generation. Through routine testing, counselling, and access to antiretroviral therapy for pregnant women, the programme has made meaningful strides in reducing new infections among infants. Beyond this, comprehensive prevention efforts target key populations and vulnerable groups, using culturally appropriate outreach methods and community engagement to ensure that information and services are accessible, non-judgmental, and responsive to the diverse needs of Jamaicans across the island.
Leadership and governance are central to the programme's effectiveness. A dedicated management team, supported by a board and advisory structures, provides strategic direction and oversight for all national initiatives. The programme also collaborates closely with other ministries and agencies, recognizing that health outcomes are shaped by factors such as education, social welfare, and gender equality. This multisectoral approach enables the programme to address the broader social and structural determinants of HIV risk, while ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and that national targets remain on track.
Looking ahead, the programme continues to adapt its strategies in response to emerging challenges and opportunities. This includes strengthening data collection and surveillance systems to better understand transmission patterns, expanding access to testing and treatment through community-based service delivery, and fostering an enabling environment grounded in human rights and empowerment. Through sustained investment in outreach, education, and partnerships, the programme remains committed to its vision of a healthier Jamaica, where every person has access to the prevention, treatment, and care they need to live a full and dignified life.
